POSITION: Autism Specialist
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree or Higher in Special Education or Related Field
- License as a Special Education Teacher
- Autism Certification preferred
- Current BCBA endorsement or BCBA candidate strongly preferred
- Minimum 5 years experience of students with ASD
- Strong Collaboration/ Consultation skills
- Excellent organization skills
- Excellent communication and presentation skills - both oral/ written
- Extensive knowledge of Special education regulations/ LRE/ FAPE
REPORTS TO:
- Executive Director of Special Education and Student Services
- Special Education Supervisors
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To improve/ enhance the educational experience for students with intensive special education needs, including but not limited to students with ASD
- To provide staff training to a variety of audiences and in a variety of formats regarding students with intensive needs and/or ASD
- To become familiar with the unique needs of each student diagnosed with or suspected of meeting the diagnostic criteria as a student with ASD
- To assist staff and communicate with parents regarding the program design, implementation, and monitoring of special education programs for students with intensive needs
SPECIFIC JOB TASKS:
- Through a variety of methods (individual consultation, seminars, topic related trainings, etc.), to increase the knowledge base of all staff working in the public schools regarding the unique needs of students with intensive special education needs and/or ASD.
- To provide resources for teachers and support staff in assessment, instruction, curriculum modifications and the development of social skills, all aimed at improving the total educational experience for students with intensive needs and/or ASD.
- To observe target students in a variety of settings for purposes of both data collection and to provide consultation to educational team members, regarding curriculum, instruction and behavior programs.
- To conduct FBAs and develop, with input from team and parents, appropriate BSPs or BIPs.
- To participate in select Team meetings for the purpose of assessing student progress and developing or revising IEPs.
- To provide ongoing data/ information to district administrators regarding ongoing and/or changing student needs for the purpose of school year and summer program planning.
- In conjunction with the child’s Team, to facilitate the transition planning for students with ASD, from EI to Preschool, as well as grade to grade, building to building.
- To assess the need for and then develop/ lead a parent group (as needs determine) for the purpose of sharing information and support, and/or to provide training for parents.
- To provide training for non-disabled peers with regard to understanding and assisting peers with intensive special education needs and/or ASD.
- To design and monitor a variety of assessment systems to document student progress.
- Any/ all other duties assigned by Special Education Administrator related to the education of students with intensive needs and/or ASD.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Able to drive own automobile.
- Able to sit on floors and/or small (preschool size) chairs, squat in classrooms or playgrounds, and/or stand for extended periods of time.
- Able to type on computer.
- Able to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Able to use wheeled cart to transport books, boxes of paper, and other materials needed for presentations.
SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
In accordance with the Fall River Educators' Association contract continued employment is contingent on work performance, program need, and funding. |
