The Superintendent of Schools announces the following position within the Fall River Public School System:


Position: Director for Visual Arts, Music, and/or Music/Performing Arts K-12


Job Description: Provide strategic management of the curriculum and professional development program in Visual Arts,
Music, and/or Music/Performing Arts.


Required Qualifications:


1.) Master's Degree


2.) Undergraduate degree and master’s degree in Visual Arts, Music, and/or Music/Performing Arts preferred.


3.) Certified in Visual Arts, Music and/or Music/Performing Arts and as Supervisor/Director


4.) Significant experience personally providing in-service training on state frameworks and relevant instructional
methods.


5.) Active involvement on Massachusetts department of education reform committees.


6.) A record of extensive, active participation in both in service and committee work.


7.) Demonstrated success in changing instructional practice of staff from primarily teacher-centered lecture to student
inquiry and application.


Performance Responsibilities:


1. Direct and monitor implementation of the "visual arts, music and performing arts" curriculum in K-12 schools and
provide feedback to principals, Superintendent and Asst. Superintendents for use in their administrative duties.


2. Oversee implementation of the "visual arts, music and performing arts" curriculum in high school departments and
provide feedback to department heads, principal and the assistant superintendent for instruction for use in carrying out
administrative duties.


3. Supervise and evaluate visual arts, music and arts teachers.


4. In conjunction with the Office of Instruction and the Leadership Team, assist in the implementation of the system-wide
goals and development plan; the alignment of the visual arts, music, and performing arts curriculum with the
Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Framework; across the system and grade levels.


5. Supervises and evaluates all visual arts, music and performing arts teachers.


6. Ensure that teachers, administrators, parents, and other members of the school community are knowledgeable about
Curriculum Frameworks, state and local learning standards, and the idea of teaching to standards.


7. Contribute to a system-wide effort to improve classroom instruction by introducing and supporting more use of the
following: project learning, inquiry approach, problem solving and higher order thinking, cooperative learning, analysis of
student thought processes, teaching for conceptual understanding, and reading and writing across the curriculum.


8. Assist the office of Instruction and principals of all schools to coordinates the development and implementation of the
Visual Arts, Music, and Performing Arts curriculum, at all grade levels.


9. Assist principals to assess the professional development needs of staff in content and methods; organize in-service
programs to meet the department needs across schools; personally conduct in-service sessions develop relationships with
outside resources that are connected to state and national research-based models and that offer access to grant funding.


10. Develop transition programs for students moving from elementary to middle and middle to high school.


11. Assist alternative classes/schools to develop high quality academic programs.


12. Conducts department meetings on a regular basis.


13. Prepares, maintains, and administers the Visual and Performing Arts budgets.

 

14. Assist in acquiring grant funds for Visual and Performing Arts programs.

 

15. Attends all pertinent school committee meetings.


16. Create linkages between Fall River Public Schools and community resources, agencies, and institutes of higher
education in the areas of Visual and Performing Arts teacher training programs.


17. Performs such other tasks and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Superintendent and Assistant
Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.


The Superintendent of Schools reserves the right to waive a position qualification or determine that there is an acceptable
alternative to that qualification. If the Superintendent intends to waive a qualification, such intent will be shared with the
Fall River School Committee.


Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Teaching and Learning


Supervises: Fine Arts Staff


Terms of Employment: Work year, salary and benefits in accordance with the Administrators' Association Contract.
