The Superintendent of Schools announces the following position within the Fall River Public School System:

 

POSITION:     SAFETY OFFICER

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Candidate must be 21 years of age or older with earned high School diploma or GED
  2. Candidate must be able to successfully pass an in-house physical ability test
  3. Candidate must be able to pass an in-house safety officer training course
  4. A strong work ethic and demonstrated initiative for continuous improvement
  5. Physical ability and stamina to perform an acceptable quantity & quality of work at all times
  6. A work history of dependability and reliability with a positive and cooperative attitude.
  7. Ability to meet attendance requirements
  8. Valid Driver’s license and proof of good driving record, at all times
  9. Must clear criminal (CORI, SORI, fingerprint), physician’s physical and chemical screenings
  10. Ability to become CPI and CPR / First Aid trained
  11. Ability to apply common sense understanding in oral or written instructions
  12. Ability to interact  and relate to school leadership, faculty, staff, and public in a courteous manner
  13. Ability to work in inclement weather, including heat, cold, rain, or snow  
  14. Ability to demonstrate professional judgement and appropriately respond to crisis under pressure

 

Preference will be given to:

 

  1. Military Veterans with honorable discharges
  2. Prior law enforcement experience in municipal, state, or education agencies
  3. Retirees from the Department of Correction
  4. Earned Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degrees in public safety related field
  5. Candidates currently on Civil Service or municipal listS for public safety departments (police, fire, EMS)
  6. Earned certifications in public safety related programs (i.e. First Responder)
  7. Two-years successful supervision of students in a structured setting (ex. athletic coach, Boys’ & Girls’ Club, camp counselor, group home)
  8. Candidates who have successfully passed the ParaPro exam

 

POSITION SUMMARY:  To provide a safe and secure environment for learning, and to provide a security presence as directed at academic, athletic, enrichment, and social events during and after regular school hours.

 

REPORTS TO:  Director of Operations / Facilities and Operations Division in consultation with the school building Principal for all school-based operations and performance evaluations. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

   

  1. Assist the building Principal and school leadership team in providing a safe and secure environment for learning for all faculty, staff, students and families.
  2. Implement and maintain daily school safety / security operational protocol by patrolling interior points of entrance/exit, passageways, common areas including restrooms, instructional areas, gymnasium, auditorium, cafeteria and assembly areas as assigned
  3. Ensures appropriate pedestrian traffic patterns and flow along interior passageways and exterior walkways.
  4. Monitors motor vehicle traffic issues around assigned facility, including but not limited to vehicle-free zones/building proximity, parking areas and speed.
  5. Pre-qualifies visitors, vendors and external contractors while monitoring accountability using registration (sign-in/out), identification badge assignment, controlled access areas and passage routes throughout the facility. Provides directions as needed as well as information regarding visitation policies and protocols to all authorized visitors.
  6. Controls and diffuses disturbances before, during and after school hours, within school buildings, upon school grounds and along access and egress routes. This includes physical altercations.                                              
  7. Assists in investigation of causes of school disturbances, theft, vandalism, and/or breaches in safety and security policies and protocols.
  8. Employ the use of metal detecting devices and physical bag checks for the monitoring of safe and secure school access as needed.
  9. Assists school resource (police) officers, local police, fire safety officers and EMTs as necessary while ensuring the maintenance of professional, collegial working relationships.
  10. Maintains logs, prepares reports and/or other documentation related to security and/or safety.
  11. Maintain honest, open communication with school leadership team and security staff.
  12. Develop and maintain positive relationships with students, while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned by security supervisor and / or building Principal.

 

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with the Fall River AFSCME Council 93 Local 1118 Security Officer’s Contract. Continued employment is contingent on work performance, program need, and funding.
